Maldives Zakat House held a strategic meeting with Datuk Prof. Dr. Abdelaziz Berghout to discuss strengthening the management of zakat in the Maldives through the development of a comprehensive strategic and operational plan.
The meeting primarily focused on formulating a 5–10 year roadmap to enhance the structure and effectiveness of Maldives Zakat House. Prof. Abdelaziz shared valuable insights on applying ijtihad in defining and categorizing zakat beneficiaries, building a more robust zakat system aligned with Maqasid al-Shari’ah, and conducting market analysis and research to identify key performance indicators and success factors. He also emphasized the importance of strengthening institutional planning and operational efficiency for long-term impact.
The dialogue highlighted the importance of forward-looking strategies to position Maldives Zakat House as a model zakat institution, capable of delivering greater socio-economic benefits to the community.
Datuk Prof. Dr. Abdelaziz Berghout is a renowned scholar with over three decades of experience in Islamic studies, education, and strategic planning. He is the architect behind the Strategic Plan of the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) and recently served as a Keynote Speaker at the International Zakat Conference (INZAC) 2025.
Prof. Abdelaziz has authored numerous books and publications and has received multiple international recognitions for his contributions to Islamic scholarship and social development. His scholarly journey began with research on the Islamic taxation system, particularly zakat, underscoring its role as a cornerstone of the Islamic financial and social framework.
His strong connection to the Maldives and extensive expertise are expected to play a pivotal role in guiding Maldives Zakat House towards building a sustainable and impactful zakat system.
